Attachment: Recognising safe haven and secure base in the sand tray

Date: Tuesday 28th & Wednesday 29th October

Daily Schedule for both days (GMT):  9:30am - 4:00pm with 1 hour lunch and 2x 15 minute breaks

Venue: The Wellbeing Centre Teddington, Station Road, Teddington TW11 9AA. Click here for more information on the location. For those needing accommodation, Travelodge London Teddington is across the road just a 2-minute walk away.

Description: Attachment needs deserve to be held in homeostatic balance. We need to be held close and we need to be supported in exploration. When our relational needs are not held in rhythm, the internalized models wisely hold self-protective strategies that, tragically, then make having those needs met in the future more complicated. This both contains trauma and increases the chances for accumulating future trauma more likely.

Expressive therapies are well suited for trauma-informed work due to their utilization of all the senses, their honoring of client timing, and their comfort with externalized metaphor. This 2-day workshop will overview some expressive approaches, with special focus on sandtray therapy, allowing practice time for trauma-sensitive applications and taking special consideration for the added complexities of working with those with attachment and trauma (such as families impacted by intergenerational trauma and adoption). This workshop will be highly experiential.

Learning Objectives:
1. Overview major tenets of expressive therapies
2. Discuss trauma-informed concepts involved in expressive therapies
3. Discuss relevant trauma-informed relational neuroscience
4. Overview how attachment rhythms affect resiliency
5. Practice trauma-informed specific interventions from different types of expressive therapies that adjust to shifting streams of attachment energy. There will be particular focus on learning specialised adaptations in expressive sand tray work for attachment-related presentations.
6. Practice expressive therapy treatment planning for those affected by attachment trauma

Facilitator: Marshall Lyles (he/him), is a Licensed Professional Counselor - Supervisor (LPC-S), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist - Supervisor (LMFT-S), and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S). Marshall has 20 years of practice in family, expressive arts, and play therapies. Drawing on lessons learned from working with attachment loss and trauma in a variety of mental health settings, Marshall regularly teaches on complex trauma and grief, medical trauma, expressive therapies, and attachment-informed family play therapy.

These areas of interest were largely informed by Marshall’s early life experiences of growing up as a Muscular Dystrophy patient in a family with few resources in rural Texas as well as being an adoptive parent alongside his partner, Heather. Marshall has written several articles, chapters, and books on attachment trauma, expressive healing, and sandtray therapy. Honored with awards from US play therapy associations and the EMDR community, Marshall feels privileged to engage with fellow healers around the world about the role of connection and expression in healing.

A good teacher imparts information. A great teacher does, too, and also connects, moves the soul, and inspires. Marshall is a great and humble teacher....Delightfully profound.

~Eliana Gil

I have had the privilege of learning from Marshall Lyles numerous times in the past years. I so thoroughly enjoyed his intelligent and engaging presentations that I recruited him as the featured speaker for the annual Winter Retreat for the Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Association for Play Therapy. Marshall's warm and compassionate nature translates easily to an engaging presentation style full of experiential exercises and opportunities for self-reflection. He is widely read and exceptionally well-versed in ethics and theory. As a result, he is able to connect deeply with learners of all backgrounds and experience levels. Marshall is an incredibly competent and naturally gifted therapist, and I highly recommend him both as a speaker and as a colleague.

Marshall Lyles is an impactful and powerful presenter.  He is regularly lauded by peers and conference attendees for his ability to hold the attention and interest of his audience. Marshall has a way of making complex topics approachable to the average person.  He is a knowledgeable professional with amazing insight and intellect. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Marshall on referred presentations and have also attended his professional trainings. Marshall has a gift of authenticity.  He stands out among other professionals and educators because of his unique ability to engage his audience. Marshall is quiet and unassuming, but when he speaks you’ll want to listen, and you’ll be glad you did.
