Play Therapy with gifted and twice-exceptional children

Presenter: Mandi Melendez, MA, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S

Description: Intellectually gifted children represent a small percentage of our population and yet are found in virtually every play therapy setting, as they are far more likely to struggle with social and emotional issues, as well existential concerns, than the general population. They tend to develop in an asynchronous fashion, whereby major cognitive leaps are at odds with average or even delayed development of social skills and emotional regulation.  This workshop will examine the unique needs of gifted children and their families, and explore how these needs are well-supported by play therapy.

Date: March 27, 2026

Time: 11 am - 3:15 pm Eastern time

Objectives

1.      Describe at least two markers of intellectual giftedness in children and how these may show up in play therapy.

2.      Explain the concept of being “twice exceptional” and its intersection with play therapy.

3.      List three common challenges that gifted children may experience, and how play therapy can support these needs

Cost: Registration cost is suggested at $120. The speakers in the Harris Family Play Therapy Courses series have all donated their time as has the CE sponsor. Minor administrative fees to cover the costs of support personnel will be deducted.

A GoFundMe link will be sent to you in your confirmation email and, by registering, you are provided a suggested donation amount of $120 as an act of generosity to the Harris family and not as a promise of return of provided services.

CE information: Four CEs will be provided and are sponsored by Marshall Lyles, APT Approved Provider 17-508. A zoom link will be provided within 24 hours of the event.

Cancellation policy: As this is a charitable campaign, no refunds are available.
