Course Description

This 40-hour course prepares licensed clinicians to serve as clinical supervisors by grounding the technical and ethical competencies required by state licensing boards within a relational worldview. Rather than treating supervision as a purely evaluative or hierarchical function, this course frames the supervisory relationship itself as the primary vehicle for growth for the supervisee, the client, and the supervisor. Participants will examine major models of supervision, the developmental and relational dimensions of the supervisory alliance, and the practical roles and foci that structure supervisory work. Emphasis is placed on the "person-of-the-supervisor," multicultural and power-aware practice, and the ethical and administrative infrastructure (contracts, plans, record-keeping) needed to supervise responsibly. Through pre-work assignments, live instruction across two multi-day virtual sessions, and applied assignments (a supervision contract, supervision plan, and tracking system), participants will leave equipped to supervise from a relationally attuned, ethically sound, and developmentally responsive stance. This course meets the Texas 40-hour training requirement for clinical supervisor designation, including required content in ethics/standards of practice, supervision models, the supervisory relationship, supervision methods and techniques, multicultural supervision, group supervision, and evaluation. If you are licensed in other states, you need to review your governing body’s standards for licensure as a supervisor.

CE Information

40-hour course consisting of:

• 24 contact hours through live virtual meetings

• 16 hours of homework through a home study element

• 8 hours of homework due before each of Part 1 and Part 2

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe their state's ethics code provisions governing clinical supervision, including eligibility requirements to become a supervisor and the legal/ethical responsibilities of that role.

2. Discuss, through reflective writing, their own supervision history and how those experiences shape their emerging "person-of-the-supervisor" and intended supervisory stance.

3. Compare major models of clinical supervision, including developmental and relational frameworks, and identify how a relational worldview informs supervisory practice.

4. Discuss the supervisory relationship as a central mechanism of counselor development, drawing on working-alliance and relational-developmental theory.

5. Apply the three supervisory roles—teacher, counselor, and consultant—to varied supervisee needs and developmental levels.

6. Apply the three foci of supervision—process, conceptualization, and personalization—in live and simulated supervisory interactions.

7. Design an individualized supervision plan for a new associate that addresses screening, monthly hour requirements, group vs. individual and in-person vs. online formats, and contingency planning (e.g., supervisor or supervisee absence).

8. Describe a comprehensive, legally sound supervision contract that clarifies roles, expectations, evaluation procedures, and termination conditions.

9. Apply a practical system for tracking supervisee hours and maintaining supervision records consistent with legal and ethical documentation standards.

10. Discuss group supervision effectively, applying knowledge of group dynamics, structure, and process to support multiple supervisees simultaneously.

11. Apply multicultural and relational-cultural frameworks to address race, ethnicity, gender, and power dynamics within the supervisory relationship.

12. Apply appropriate formative and summative evaluation methods that provide meaningful, growth-oriented feedback consistent with a relational approach to supervision.

    
    

Registration Information

One registration covers the complete 40-hour training: Part 1 on June 18–19 and Part 2 on August 13–14, 2027, plus 16 hours of home study. Attendance at both parts (all four live training days) is required. These are required parts of one course, not alternative dates. Register and pay once. This course costs $950, which includes all 40 CEs. CEs will be distributed once the participant completes the course in its entirety. The live elements will be hosted on Zoom. Participants will be emailed their homework assignments and a link to the Google Drive folder where the homework will be uploaded. The homestudy hours offered are based on the word count of required readings.

Supervision and Standards of Practice (8 hours)

3 hours: Review your state's ethics code and licensing board regulations governing clinical supervision. Prepare a written summary covering: (a) eligibility requirements to become an approved supervisor, (b) ongoing supervisor responsibilities and obligations to supervisees and the board, and (c) any documentation or reporting requirements.

5 hours: Write a personal reflective essay (suggested 4–6 pages) addressing: What did you need from your own supervisors during your development as a clinician? Where were those needs met or unmet? How do these experiences inform the “person-of-the-supervisor” you intend to become, and how will they shape your relational approach to supervision practice?

Part 1 (Online): June 18–19, 2027 — 12 Hours

Day 1 — June 18, 2027 (9:00 am – 4:00 pm)

10:00 –11:00 am (1 hr): Defining and conceptualizing supervision — history, purpose, and distinctions from therapy/consultation

Ethics — Applied Supervision Infrastructure (8 hours)

3 hours: Create a sample supervision plan for a new associate, addressing: intake/screening process, how the associate's required monthly supervision hours will be met, individual vs. group format, in-person vs. online delivery, session length/frequency (e.g., 2-hour groups), and a contingency plan for supervisor or supervisee absences/vacations.

3 hours: Draft a supervision contract that specifies roles, expectations, confidentiality limits, evaluation procedures, methods of contact between sessions, grounds for termination, and emergency/backup coverage procedures.

2 hours: Establish a system for tracking supervisee hours and maintaining supervision records (e.g., log templates, digital tracking tools, retention timelines) consistent with your state board's documentation requirements.

Part 2 (Virtual): August 13–14, 2027 — 12 Hours
