Description: All therapists, regardless of theoretical orientation or clinical setting, need to be equipped to embody mindfulness and practice quality attunement with clients. Effective attunement impacts client engagement in therapy, client retention, and overall therapeutic effectiveness. Play therapy, whether used in individual or group contexts, offers unique opportunities for creating space for felt experiences with mindful attunement. This workshop will introduce the protocols for practicing effective play therapy using the sand tray while offering even advanced sandtray practitioners the opportunity to enhance skills by focusing on creative applications for increased mindful attunement with clients. The workshop will be heavily experiential and could elicit strong emotions for participants, but special attention to building safe resources will precede all experiential practice.

    Learning objectives:
    1. Describe the shared space between mindfulness and play therapy using information from the relational neurosciences
    2. Describe the attunement possibilities in play therapy by mindfully connecting to the 6 steps of the sandtray protocol
    3. Practice 3 creative options for delivering sandtray prompts with diverse client populations in play therapy
    4. Apply the interpersonal neurobiology of attunement to play therapy’s use of narrative processing, particularly focusing on connecting to clients through created sandtray worlds
    5. Practice embodied play therapy reflecting skills while processing a sandtray world
    6. Apply information from mindful play therapy practice to a self-care plan
