Description:
Dissociation is a misunderstood and mistreated protector as clinicians are often taught to fear this nervous system adaptation. While dissociation does require special care, clients deserve to have these parts of self to be welcomed into their therapeutic work. Sandtray-based play therapy, when handled carefully, can be utilized in learning to recognize dissociative pockets in clients of all ages and provide these states the messages of support they deserve. This workshop will explore these concepts through lecture, case examples, group discussion, and experiential activities.
Learning objectives:
Discuss dissociation from a nervous system point-of-view using anti-ableist language
Describe the various other protective states engaged by body and mind when under threat
Discuss methods of assessing for dissociation in play-based clinical interviews
Explain the basic tenets of sandtray-based play therapy
Describe sandtray and play therapy adaptations when working with complex trauma
Discuss sandtray/play therapy client behaviors that can reveal pockets of dissociation
Describe ways to use the sand tray for psychoeducation about dissociation during play therapy
Discuss ways for effectively working with spontaneous emergence of dissociation during sandtray-based play therapy sessions
