Play therapy to strengthen healthy connections with couples and families

    Facilitators:

    Eliana Gil and Marshall Lyles

    Description:

In this highly interactive and experiential workshop, participants will have opportunities to develop reflective practices around their involvement in providing play therapy to family systems. Facilitators and participants will explore how our unfolding person of the play therapist identities intersect with systemic theories and healing practices. Using many expressive therapy modalities, the group will find its rhythm and pace and co-create some of the programming to meet their personal and professional goals. Participants will be encouraged to explore the healing aspects of creativity and metaphor in the context of dynamic family play therapy sessions while accessing their own creativity and/or hesitancies in response to a family’s unique circumstances and goals.

    Objectives:
    1. Discuss the basic constructs of expressive therapies, focusing on creativity, imagination, and connection
    2. Describe the integration of attachment theory with a few prominent play therapy clinical theories
    3. Discuss the historical context and rationale of integrating the disciplines of play therapy and family therapy
    4. Promote and discuss how to conceptualize treatment planning utilizing a systemic lens
    5. Apply treatment planning to family play therapy sessions while attending to theoretical and developmental considerations
    6. Describe how to use parent consultations to enhance family-based play therapy sessions
    7. Apply play-based techniques with families of various cultural backgrounds, learning styles, and relationships to mental health services
