Strolling through time: Listening to the Voices of Play Therapy History

It’s important to know one’s roots. Play therapists are often discounted – but with a firm and detailed knowledge of the history of play therapy – one is equipped to provide information to the nay-sayers.
The development of play therapy parallels that of the entire mental health movement. This presentation will cover from the beginning of using ‘play techniques’ with Little Hans, Klein and A. Freud. Then the first to use the term “play therapy” Lowenfeld and what follows. A brief overview of the body of play therapy research to todays evidenced-based will also be given.

Objectives:
The participant will be able to:
Name the person who coined the term ‘play therapy’
Name the person and date of who had the first published play therapy research.
Identify who first used “toys are their words, play in the language”.
